A1. Effective SMEs: How to Help Subject Matter Experts Facilitate Learning

A1 Session Description

Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) bring depth of experience, credibility, and relevance to live instructor-led training. Their contributions and institutional knowledge are immeasurable.

Reliance on them in the training room also brings a certain amount of risk because SMEs are not, in most cases, experts in facilitation. It’s our responsibility then, as learning professionals, to do what we can to design learning events to play to their strengths and to coach them to be successful in the training room.

In this session we’ll explore ways to improve their likelihood of success. We’ll begin by identifying ways to design learning events specifically for SMEs, and end with non-threatening coaching techniques you can use to help them improve their delivery.

Implementing Lawyer Well-Being - 8 step action plan for launching a well-being program

This breakout session explores the basics on how to create, launch and support professional development programming for lawyers on well-being. Discuss approaches on how to develop and deliver programming for lawyers, which aims to advance the conversation about mental health and personal wellbeing in the profession and help reduce the stigma associated with these issues. Gain insight into key best practices in tailoring content, selecting speakers, choosing an appropriate delivery method and analyzing audience appetite for various mental health related topics.

A3 Session Description

A hands-on, interactive presentation. Our presenters will be bringing two books each from their shops (one successful and one not so much). You will look through and discuss at your table - what you like, what you don’t like, what you would add, and your guess at the price of the book. Then, the publishing shop will share how the book has performed, the price they are offering and their thoughts on the publication.

B2. Now You See Us: Why Cultural Competency Matters for Attorneys and Those Who Train Them

Attorneys have an ethical duty to be competent attorneys. But as the nation heads toward minority-majority status, what does competency mean for attorneys practicing in this swiftly-changing environment? And how are we as educators, navigating these transforming waters as well, to deliver programming that reflects culturally competent practices for both our attorneys and ourselves? This session will dive into the meaning of cultural competency, discuss its role in the greater diversity debate, and examine how providers can both teach effective cultural competency courses, while ensuring their programming meets CLE requirements across the country.

B3. Identifying and Nurturing Volunteer Talent*

This workshop will explore both proven and innovative strategies to recruit, incentivize, and retain the volunteer talent that comprises the lifeblood of our organizations. Learn from the perspective of three different major metropolitan bar associations techniques to identify talent; create content; allocate jobs to non-instructor “support” volunteers; create incentives and volunteer recognition mechanisms; ease the volunteer load; and create genuine relationships to support lifelong volunteer loyalty. Podcasting is finally getting the recognition it deserves. In this presentation, you will learn various tips, tricks, and techniques on how to streamline your podcasting production process. You will also see how to create interactive and trackable podcasting so that you can capture more in-depth metrics on how your content was consumed. Lastly, you will learn how to publish the content for multiple purposes using a variety of free tools and channels.

At the end of this session, you will be able to:

Plenary Description

Dr. George Dierberger, business professor and former 3M Executive will discuss the importance of pricing for non-profits. The presentation will include general pricing approaches that include the following: demand oriented (skimming, market penetration, prestige, odd-even, target, bundle and yield pricing), cost oriented (standard mark-up, cost-plus pricing), profit oriented (target profit pricing, return on sales and return on investment) and competition based pricing loss-leader, above, equal or below market pricing).

Other topics will include price elasticity, demand curve and legal/ethical considerations (price fixing, discrimination, deceptive and predatory pricing). We will close with a discussion on discounts, allowances, and flexible pricing.
