ACLEA's 55th Mid-Year Meeting, January 25-27, 2019

The weather is beautiful, the sun is shining, and it’s time for you to get outdoors in beautiful Phoenix.

Phoenix has so many great hiking trails, most a quick Uber ride away. The most ionic, Camelback Mountain is a fantastic hike and a great way to take in the views of the entire city. This is an advanced trail for experienced hikers.

The Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix is a true gem tucked into downtown Phoenix. With koi ponds, beautiful foliage, and serene spots to meditate and take in the beauty.

For sports fans, schedule a tour of Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Several tours are scheduled every day so there is bound to be one to fit in your schedule.

Get your science on and visit the Arizona Science Center. The Center has several hands-on exhibits and is great for all ages.

If the kids are tagging along, you can’t miss the Children’s Museum of Phoenix. Located in a historic school, it offers three floors of fun for kids and adults.

Outside of the Science Center, you’ll find Heritage Square which provides a rich history of Phoenix. The square dates back to the 1880’s and features the fully restored Rosson House Museum.

Before you leave Heritage Square, you must grab a slice at the infamous Pizzeria Bianco. It gets busy quick so get their early to get a table.

Hop on the light rail and head north to the Burton Barr Central Library. With 5 floors, you can find that one book you’ve always wanted to get your hands on. Don’t miss the rare book room.  Appointments in advance are required to visit this room.

Near the library is the world preeminent museum for American Indian Art, the Heard Museum. The museum boosts breathtaking exhibits with more than 40,000 objects.

Want to get away…a little farther?

Jump on the light rail and head east to Tempe. Home of Arizona State University, Mill Avenue is hopping with restaurants, bars, and sites. Or, enjoy a stroll along Tempe Town Lake and take in a sunset.

Now let’s talk food and drink.

The real reason you are coming! Phoenix is the quiet giant in the foodie world but rest assure, there are plenty of options.

With that, here are the top 11 in the downtown area:

  1. Taco Guild
  2. Gadzook’s
  3. Valley Bar
  4. Angel’s Trumpet Ale House
  5. Matt’s Big Breakfast
  6. Mother Brunch
  7. Lustre Roof Top Bar
  8. Squid Ink
  9. Churchhill
  10. Paz Catina
  11. Arrogant Butcher

Looking for fun?!?! We've got that too!
