“My board will never go for that.” “Lawyers will never change, anyway.” “Well, I’d personally love to do that, but you know how the MCLE Reg folks are…” Many of us have uttered, or heard, frustrations like this in response to program ideas that might help lawyers address the substantial mental health issues they face.  But if other massive, tradition-driven, bureaucratic organizations can change, maybe law firms and bar associations can too?  Come join us for a lively roundtable discussion—by some of the folks that led the charge—of the U.S. Army’s successful efforts to restructure its basic training to include resilience strategies that soldiers can employ proactively, not just in crisis response.  We’ll explore the similarity of the obstacles these brave pioneers faced, and hear how they were able to overcome them, slowly but surely.  Participants will leave inspired and better equipped to pursue a similar strategy for the benefit of the lawyers they serve in various contexts within the realm of CLE.

    The vast majority of ethical and professional misconduct and successful malpractice claims stem not from gaps in substantive knowledge of the law, but from a lack of healthy engagement and overall well-being.  Simply put, mentally resilient lawyers who practice good self-care and stay connected to their peers in healthy relationships rarely, if ever, cross ethical lines, or miss deadlines. But how can we get lawyers to actually attend and participate in programs that are good for them on this level?  Building on the theme of the morning plenary, this hands-on workshop will provide a chance to get down to the “nitty gritty” of planning and producing CLE programs that help lawyers develop resilience and greater well-being, all with the goal of helping them practice more ethically, professionally, and sustainably.  We’ll talk about how to get CLE approval, and how to market to those who need it most, instead of just “preaching to the choir.”  Come share your successes and failures, and learn a few new tricks, to boot.
